The Zulu name for the Drakensberg is uKhahlamba, which describes the echoes that bounce off the cliffs, which sound like the clashing of spears against the shields. Spectacular gorges and valleys Most of KwaZulu-Natal's major rivers rise here and plunge down into the steep-sided gorges and valleys below. Sani Pass is only a 30 minute drive from Himeville and 15 minutes from Underberg. A vast protected area Almost the entire Drakensberg area is a protected park, a paradise of trails, rivers and dams, with an abundance of wildlife and rare plant. Rivers and dams are well stocked with trout, making fly-fishing especially rewarding. Sani Valley boarders the Sani Pass and the National Nature Reserve. A fascinating ancient culture The Bushman San hunter-gatherers lived on these mountains from about 8000 years ago until the mid 1800s and left behind a priceless legacy of rock art. These fascinating paintings tell the story of their stone-age culture, rituals and spiritual beliefs. Take a walk into the uKhalhamba Drakensberg Park to see these wonderful paintings, which are some of the finest in the Drakensberg An All Year Round Destination South Africa is one of the countries where the number of sunshine hours is the highest in the world. Thanks to its high altitude, the Drakensberg region, where Sani Valley is located, enjoys great seasonal contrasts; it makes it wonderful to visit, at any time of the year. The Weather at Sani Valley Summer temperatures are warm, with short afternoon rain falls bringing welcome relief from the heat (Summer: December, January, February). In Autumn, as the heat diminishes, the landscape slowly turns into a symphony of warm colours (Autumn: March, April, May). Winters are dry and warm at daytime, but it gets considerably colder at night with temperatures often dropping well below zero (Winters: June, July, August). Spring is a season of great contrasts with trees beginning to blossom and temperatures starting to rise. This is the time for the early growth of the bush and flush of green colours (Spring: September, October, November). Fly-Fishing Fisherman, you will enjoy both our main dam and our trophy dam! The main 260 acre lake is well stocked with trout and offers excellent fly-fishing opportunities with brown and rainbow trout ranging from 1 pound to 12 pounds (yes, the record trout fished in the lake is 12 pounds!). Trout fishing is a gentleman’s sport and we at Sani Valley are strong supporters of catch and release to ensure great fishing for all for years to come. Guided trout fishing and hire equipment is available on request. Sani Valley has two smaller dams at your disposal, all of which are stocked regularly. Our trout hatchery produces between 40 000- 50 000 baby trout, all of which are released into the dams at 2 inches (fry stage). Many die, but the natural mortality of these fish produces true wild trophy trout leaving only the strong and wild for you to tackle. The tackle shop at the reception will cater for all anglers’ basic needs as well as tackle for hire. Boating Sani Valley is the perfect spot for boating and swimming. The lake has a dugout edge so there is no need to wade through reeds and slush. There are 5 fishing boats available for guests to use (fishing or leisurely cruises). Guests can either opt for a motor for their boat or they can utilise oars. (Boats & motors are an optional extra) . If fishing boats aren't for you, then you can try out one of the Kayak canoes. Fishermen are however encouraged to bring their own float tubes or kick boats. This is where most angling success is had. Guests are more than welcome to bring their own boats and motors so long as the motors are less than 5 hp, so as not to negatively impact on other fisherman
